Carat

As a unit of mass, one carat (used for gemstones) is 200 milligrams, and as a measure of purity, n-carat gold (n=24) is n/24 gold by weight. (12-carat gold is 50% gold, etc.)

The whole world uses carat for both gemstone weight/mass and for the purity of precious metal, gold specifically. The WHOLE WORLD! I know Americans like to think they are 'the world', but they're not!

Some Americans insist on using karat (which gets a wiggly red line from [American] Windows spell-checker!), despite no formal declaration by any official or respected body that I can find. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accepts both and has issued no formal ruling on either as being preferable, only on purity levels, which - like food standards, labour standards and building standards et.al. - are lower than their European equivalents.

The Americans who wish to promote the use of the k-word will say things like "In British English, karat is an alternative spelling of carat." It is not.
